The Blanket Exercise

The Kairos Blanket Exercise is experiential exercise that teaches Indigenous history – the version that’s rarely taught or known. The exercise is one of the key steps to reconciliation and covers around 400 years of history in one hour. Theresa Gebrail, communications specialist for WJS, participated in the BC exercise and shares her. Doing the Blanket Exercise requires at least one hour. Depending on whether you are using the youth or adult script, it lasts 35-50 minutes. It is important to have at least 15 minutes to debrief. An in-depth discussion or talking circle following the Blanket Exercise – which can easily last another hour – is encouraged.

Blanket Exercise, Teaching Indigenous History. An exercise that is being done more and more throughout much of Canada at different various places, the blanket exercise is a tool that tells a story of how the First Nations People lost their lands to the early settlers. Lets explore more about this interesting exercise.

The blanket exercise. The Blanket Exercise is an interactive learning experience that teaches the Indigenous rights history we’re rarely taught. Originally developed by Kairos Canada more than 20 years ago in response to the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples (1996) , the exercise takes participants through Canadian history from an Indigenous perspective. The KAIROS Blanket Exercise is a workshop that explores the nation-to-nation relationship between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples in Canada. The blanket exercise shows me that it’s still not enough, that change is slow, but there’s hope. That becomes especially clear after we sit to share our feelings about what we’d experienced. We go around the circle, and more tears are shed as the discussion focuses on loss. The Blanket Exercise itself takes about an hour and should always be followed by a talking circle which often requires at least another hour. With youth, ninety minutes for both the Blanket Exercise and debrief is sometimes feasible. Please note, we require that people undergo facilitator training before accessing the scripts. With the “blanket exercise," participants stand on blankets that represent the lands inhabited by indigenous people that eventually became Canada. Facilitators pull back and remove the blankets.

The Blanket Exercise has been done in council meetings, adult Sunday school classes, Sunday evening services, Sunday morning services, Classis meetings…you name it!
